Shakespeare Engineering Group News - Summer 2010

Welcome to our twelfth newsletter.

Although trading across the world continues to be demanding and very unpredictable it is encouraging to see that programmes which were shelved eighteen months ago are now starting to show signs of being revitalised... a good sign for all parts of the global economy. As part of our responsibility to act in an 'environmentally aware way' when partaking in air travel, we committed to planting a tree whenever one of us took an international flight . We are pleased to report that we now have a 'forest in the making'....watch this space!!....we will be presenting the pictures in the next news letter !

We hope that you , your families and your friends have a fantastic summer!

Kindest regards

Neil

ASTeC's Industrial Innovation Takes Important First Step

ASTeC is currently collaborating withShakespeare Engineering Ltd to develop the fabrication processes and procedures necessary to demonstrate a capability in the UK to successfully build Superconducting RF (SRF) accelerating structures. As part of an STFC funded Mini-IPS knowledge exchange enterprise, ASTeC are working closely with Shakespeare to fabricate a single-cell demonstration structure which can be qualified and validated using ASTeC's SRF processing and testing facilities. Today marks a tremendous first stage success, whereby Shakespeare have been able to press a single half-cell of high purity sheet niobium material which will be electron-beam welded to a similar half-cell and associated beam-pipes, to make up the completed accelerating structure. Once qualified, this will be the first bulk-niobium accelerating structure to have ever been fabricated in the UK, opening up a new scientific market sector for UK industry.
